Mel Finds New Star At Kielder

Brownie Weekend Camp

HAPS received a request to visit a Brownie weekend camp with the 2nd Liversedge Brownies and Guides at Fan Woods, Gomersal.

We took the following:
a) Coronado PST for viewing the Sun
b) Various visual astronomical materials such as images, from space craft and telescopes; Meteorites; DVDs showing the Summer Night sky
c) 'Pop Bottle Rocket' kit - which uses the power of compressed air/water to simulate a rocket launch (see pictures)

The Sun was first viewed though the Coronado following which a 'live demonstration' of how the Moon orbits the Earth and the Earth orbits the Sun was done to illustrate how the phases of the Moon change and also when and how Lunar and Solar eclipses take place.
Moving indoors to show what Meteorites look like and then a short presentation of the Summer Night Sky (using a DVD as background information) and then some astronomical images of the Sun, showing the image taken on 'Transit Day' in 2004; and other images taken by HAPS members as well as those available from the www.

Then we did the 'Pop Bottle Rocket' - this drew interest from an adjacent scout camp too!

Day was finished off with a 'questions and answers' session.

The above is provided as part of the 'have Telescope will Travel' arangement the Astronomy Society provides to fulfil the principles we sighed up for when applying for Lottery and other grants.

[HTWT is available by enquiring with myself].

Observatory Open Day

September 1st Open Day

The observatory received its far share of wind, in the afternoon.

Although only a small number of visitors turned up, those that did remarked they had enjoyed the experience and we have a few new potential members and perspective students for the Beginners Course in November

The clubs telescopes on display

Visitors who came seemed to enjoy their visit

Some solar viewing was possible despite the clouds

Roberts rockets went with a bang (Pop bottle firing)

Sunday 12th August saw the Annual Society Barbeque

A good feast was had by all especially Robert who surpassed even the 4 star restaurants
Smoked salmon starter followed by burgers and sausages, and sweet with double cream, not bad for a venue on the moors in outer Yorkshire, and believe it or not the SUN WAS OUT
